Determination: 25-hydroxyvitamin D
This is a blood test for 25-hydroxyvitamin D, whicl is a circulating form of vitamin D. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin produced primarily from ultraviolet light exposure of the skin. Vitamin D is also found in some foods and is essential for calcium absorption and bone formation.
Vitamin D deficiency is common as many individuals do not get adequate ultraviolet light exposure from sunlight each day and do not consume adequate amounts of the few natural food sources of vitamin D, which include fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel. Children, women of childbearing age, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with darker skin tones are all at higher risk for vitamin D deficiency. People who spend little time outside (with little skin exposed), those with malabsorptive diseases, liver disease, and people living at higher latitudes are also at high risk for vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D leve are also likely to decrease in the winter months due to decreased sun exposure. Sunscreen use also decreases vitamin D production.
